Sitting in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese Archipelago lies virtually at the centre, with Malta 93 kms south of Sicily and 288 kms north of Africa .The Maltese Islands have been described as one big open-air museum. What makes our islands unique is that so much of their past is visible today.

Malta and its sister island Gozo is a kaleidoscope of civilizations. From the temples of worship built nearly 7000 years ago by the islands first inhabitants to the Order of Knights Hospitalliers (1565-1798), a brief spell of French dominion (1798-1800) and another long period of British presence (1800-1964), Malta and Gozo persisted as a stronghold of European civilization, which any casual visitor can easily trace and appreciate not only in the islands magnificent history but equally their sheer beauty and diversity.

Christianity on the islands dates back to 60AD when the galleon carrying the Apostle Paul ran aground on our shores.

The official language is Maltese. This is a language of Semitic origin written in the Latin Script. Over the centuries, it has incorporated many words derived English, Italian and French. English is the islands second language and Italian is also widely spoken.

Maltas climate is strongly influenced by the sea and is typically Mediterranean. The Islands have a sunny climate. Winters are mild, with the occasional short chilly periods. Summers are hot, dry and very sunny. Day-time temperatures in summer are often mitigated by cooling sea breezes. Bathing is possible well into the winter months and peak beach season can last well into late October.
